NBN Rewind 17 – Mattara

Mattara has always been a celebration of the community seen here in 1960’s, captured by NBN News.

Tens of thousands flock to Newcastle, to experience the festivities including the grand parade.

Spectacular floats, marching bands and huge characters entertain the enthusiastic public.

Groups across the community are involved.

A favourite, is The Hill Climb, a spectacle, not to be missed.

And the of course the crowning of the Mattara princess.

Meaning “hand of friendship” in the local Awabakal language, Mattara is an event, that brings people together.
